Installation Procedure for Rapid Reel Garden Hose Reels:
Attaching to Vinyl Siding
You need to know:
Rapid Reel Garden Hose reels are designed to give trouble free service in demanding commercial applications. The forces applied to a reel can be surprisingly high (over 100 lbs), so we want to be sure that the surface it is mounted to will handle the load.
Vinyl siding can expand and contract ¼” to ½” throughout the year. So we will not want to attach directly to it. The following mounting procedure will secure your new reel to the sheeting board and studs of your home by using standoffs that allow the vinyl siding to move freely underneath.
Tools:
- Electronic Stud finder
- Pencil
- Power drill
- 1/16” drill bit
- 1”Drill bit.
Hardware:
- (4) ¼”id x ¾”od x 1”long Standoffs
- (4) ¼” x 3” Lag Screws
Installation:
- Decide where you want the reel positioned on the wall . Choose carefully, if the reel is too low it may be difficult to wind up. Try to position the reel so that the lowest point is just above your knees. Mounting too close to other objects may make it difficult to pull the hose off the reel.
- Locate and mark the wall studs . An electronic stud finder simplifies this task. Use a pencil to mark the stud positions in the area you have chosen to mount the reel. The Rapid Reel mounting plate holes are spaced at 16 inch centers to match the most common stud spacing.
- Drill pilot holes . Locate the Rapid Reel Mounting Plate so that the 4 outside mounting holes are in line with the pencil marks locating the studs. Position the mounting plate at the desired height. Note: Make sure to:
- Avoid placing the mounting holes on the lock joint (where the top panel hooks over the bottom panel) of the siding.
- Keep plate level with the siding.
Mark the center of the 4 outside (not the middle 2) mounting holes with your pencil. At these pencil marks, drill a 1/16” pilot hole through the siding, wallboard and into the stud Reposition the mounting plate to check the location of your pilot holes, correct if necessary.
- Drill Clearance holes in Vinyl Siding : Vinyl siding expands and contracts with the outside temperature so we will make a larger hole in the vinyl siding than our standoff to allow the siding to move freely. At the pilot hole locations use a 1” drill bit to drill through the vinyl siding ONLY. DO NOT DRILL THROUGH THE SHEETING BOARD UNDERNEATH.
- Install Rapid Reel Mounting Plate . Place the standoff in the clearance holes. Position the Mounting plate over the standoff. Install the all four ¼” x 3” lag screws into the mounting holes but do not tighten completely. Carefully level the mounting plate and tighten all four screws.
- Attach your new Rapid Reel to the mounting plate .
